I did not like this move. Britton was one of the few bright spots in a terrible bullpen last year. I understand that starting pitching is harder to come by than relief pitching, and that Wright at $3 mm is somewhat of a bargain considering this market. But we are talking about a guy who has had one good year in the majors, and even that was 2 years ago in the NL. Britton is only 23 and was progressing along nicely on his way to becoming a very good relief pitcher.
Wright is now 30, and by the time our other pitchers mature enough to form a solid rotation, he will either be gone or past his prime. This just seems like another move where we marginally improve, but give up another semi-promising youngster (see Maine for Benson last year). If the Yankees were desperate to move him, then we should have made them take a minor-leaguer, not a guy who is already a major league asset.
On another note, this move makes it seem like management doesn't have too much faith that Hayden Penn will be ready to start next year in the majors.
Oh well. Hopefully, Mazzone can recapture the magic and maybe we can move him at the deadline next year.
