I just read Larry Dierker's book "My Team"(a great read, by the way ) and was inspired to make my own 2 25-man rosters from his candidates. Now, I want yours. You pick a starter and a backup at each position, a 5-man rotation, and 4 guys in the bullpen(trust me, that's all you'll need). You can only pick from the candidates provided.
Catcher: Lance Parrish, Carlton Fisk, Mike Piazza, Johnny Bench, Tim Mccarver, Gary Carter, Ivan Rodriguez
First Base: Eddie Murray, Willie Stargell, Andres Gallaraga, Jeff Bagwell, Don Mattingly, Jeff Bagwell, Frank Thomas, Keith Hernandez, Jim Thome, Harmon Killebrew, Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mccovey
Second Base: Bobby Grich, Jeff Kent, Roberto Alomar, Joe Morgan, Ryne Sandberg, Craig Biggio, Rod Carew
Third Base: Brooks Robinson, Eddie Mathews, Wade Boggs, Mike Schmidt, Ron Santo, George Brett, Chipper Jones
Shortstop: Barry Larkin, Ozzie Smith, Alan Trammel, Robin Yount, Cal Ripken Jr., Ernie Banks, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez(yes, at short)
Left Field: Billy Williams, Lou Brock, Frank Robinson, Tim Raines, Carl Yastremski, Rickey Henderson
Center Field: Jim Edmonds, Andy Van Slyke, Kirby Puckett, Mickey Mantle, Bernie Williams, Ken Griffey Jr., Willie Mays, Fred Lynn, Cesar Cedeno, Dale Murphy
Right Field: Andre Dawson, Gary Sheffield, Al Kaline, Dave Winfield, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Tony Gwynn
Starting Pitcher: Phil Niekro, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Nolan Ryan, Ferguson Jenkins, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, Gaylord Perry, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal, Jim Palmer, John Smoltz
Relief Pitcher: John Smoltz, Phil Niekro(Smoltz and Niekro can be used one way or the other, but not both), Rod Beck, Roberto Hernandez, John Wetteland, Jeff Reardon, Randy Myers, Rick Aguilera, John Franco, Lee Smith, Bruce Sutter, Tom Henke, Goose Gossage, Robb Nen, Mariano Rivera, Billy Wagner, Trevor Hoffman, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley
I will put up my teams once a few of you have done the same.
Note: The candidaes were not listed in any pre-determined order.
If we lived in a perfect world, what would be in the news?
C - Johnny Bench
1B - Frank Thomas
2B - Joe Morgan
SS - A-Rod
3B - George Brett
RF - Hank Aaron
CF - Mickey Mantle
LF - Frank Robinson
SP - Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson
RP - Rivera, Hoffman, Eck, Wetteland
Hard to pass on Tom Terrific, but I want another Lefty to go along with Carlton so RJ makes the team. Gibson v Maddux is a tough call but I've got enough fireballers already. Pedro gets my Game 1 start, at his best there has never been any better.
Mantle vs Mays is a battle I'm always going back and forth on but I'll take Mantle here because I have way too many RH hitters on the team. Brett over Schmidt for the same reason.
2B - Morgan L
SS - ARod R
CF - Mantle S
RF - Aaron R
3B - Brett L
LF - Robinson R
1B - Thomas
