DETROIT -- Jim Leyland has set his coaching staff for 2007, naming his good friend Lloyd McClendon as the new hitting coach and promoting Jeff Jones from Triple-A Toledo to take over for McClendon as the bullpen coach.
McClendon has plenty of experience as a hitting coach (much more than Don Slaught did, actually). He was a minor-leauge hitting instructor for one year, and the big-league hitting coach in Pittsburgh for four years.
Jones is very highly regarded as a pitching coach, and should be a help to Chuck Hernandez. Jones was the Tigers' bullpen coach under Sparky Anderson in 1995, under Larry Parrish in 1999, and also in 2002 under Luis Pujols. He has been a coach in the Tiger organization since 1989.
