I've had some neck and back issues since I was about 16 from various work and sports related injuries. I recently spent an ungodly amount of money on a temperpedic bed and it has really helped out a lot. Also, I've been going to a chiropractor twice a month and that helps out a lot as well. I would definitely suggest seeing a chiropractor or a real doctor, at the very least you can make a single trip for probably $50 or so and get some good tips that will help out.
This is going to make me sound like an old man, but neck pain sucks.
I use an orthipedic pillow unless I have a young lady spend the night. Spending 7 hours with your neck in the proper resting position does wonders for the pain. It's pretty great.
Also, a heating pad/massager when it gets really bad is great.
There was a time when I would have a stiff neck on two days, on average, every week. Couldn't figure out why. I believe that last February and March, I had awful neck pain that lingered for two months until I got so exasperated by it, I just applied a heat patch on it everyday for a week.
My problem was susceptibility to stiff necks for an extensive period of time but they pop up at random and seldom do they pop up. Maybe your problem is worse than neck stiffness.
One thing I liked about having a stiff neck though was that gave me a valid excuse to ask my last ex to massage my neck and shoulder stiffness for like an hour everyday. Man, was she a great masseuse.

Neck pain does suck!
I have been sleeping without a pillow. I think I need a orthopedic one. Its killing me and contributing to headaches and stuff.
