Beleive it or not, he has arguably been the best player on the Sox since he became a regular starter. He has come up with clutch hit after clutch hit for the Sox in their soon to be successful quest for a playoff berth. Would it be that far-fetched for Ortiz to be the AL MVP?

Personally, I think it's far fetched. I think you have to consider the whole season. Without Nomar and Manny contributing early, Ortiz might not have gotten this opportunity. Pedro has been lights out since returning as well. Without that guaranteed win every 5th game, the Sox might not be in the race. I'd be split between 4 players if I had to vote for Boston's MVP, and I don't think any of them have stood out enough to get the AL MVP. Nomar/Manny/Ortiz/Pedro have all made big contributions. I'm not trying to downplay Ortiz because he has done very well and certainly helped the Sox win games, I just don't think he stands out as the AL MVP.

I don't think so either. The AL-MVP race has no clear cut winner right now. It doesn't even have any clear cut participants. I think that A-Rod is going to win by default, having a great statistical year. People usually use the old "who was the most valuable to the team that made the playoffs" adage when voting for MVP, but this year it's anyone's game. Talking about Shannon Stewart winning MVP is preposterous... about as far fetched as claiming David Ortiz has a shot... yet you can find such chatter on ESPN.

i wouldn't say he's the MVP, but i remember one stretch where i'd read the paper in the morning and i'd read "david ortiz homered for the red sox". i mean, after i think it was 6 days, i was thinking, "how can he not have 40 homers by now?"

Yeah, the Sox have too many major contributors, which will all cancel each other out. I think this year should go to A-Rod.

Please do not give me any Jorge Posada. He would bat 9th for the Red Sox. If the NY media needs to pick a darling, go with Rivera.

yeah i read the star-ledger's article...if posada gets the MVP i'll eat my hat.
