Prospect(s) for Liriano?

Postby JRM4833 » Thu Nov 02, 2006 1:25 pm

Liriano was mentioned to me in trade talks in a league where I have a very good minor league squad already. My minor leaguers:

1. Ian Stewart
2. Stephen Drew
3. Jeff Niemann
4. Adam Miller
5. Nick Markakis
6: Jon Lester

I've also already promoted Felix, Prince, and Johjima, and I have rights to Garza and Gorzellany.

Anyway, the other team is looking for position prospects but I'm not sure what I could/should offer. I'd say Drew is my top prospect right now with Stewart dropping a bit after a poor season. I know he likes Markakis so would a Stewart/Markakis offer make sense for me? If he pushes for Drew, should I listen or just walk away with what is already likely to be a good staff in the near future?

Both of those offers sound like you'd be overpaying to me. Liriano has always been an injury concern.

If you're going to trade for Liriano now -- with the possibility of Tommy John surgery still out there -- make sure you're getting a deal.

Liriano's a very risky proposition right now, his '07 season is in jeopardy. If you can get him on the cheap, it's worth the risk, but I wouldn't give up too much for him.

What if it was straight up Stewart for Liriano? I know Stewart's value has dropped a bit with his potential move to OF. And this way I'd keep Markakis. Not sure he would go for it or even if I should push for it though.

Food for thought - when guys offer to trade stud pitchers like Liriano for prospects who won't provide immediate help - theres usually something fishy going on. In Liriano's case 18 months on the shelf and the prospect of never being the same dominant pitcher again.

I make it a habit of waiting a week whenever I get ANY offer of a proactive trade offered by another owner - especially one like this (thats just me). If there is anything fishy going on that I don't already know about it has time to come out in the wash. If they are in that much of a hurry to make the trade that they aren't willing to wait a week - then thats a telltale sign somethings amiss.

Added: You initial post dated November 2, the surgery took place November 6 - the other owner had advance notice that the surgery was going to be done.
