A question- is a guy's performance relative to the league calculated for purposes of what class of FA they are just based on the last season before FA, or an average of the life of their previous contract, or what?

My guess is that it's based purely on his performance the previous season, but my only bases for that is my assumption that MLB will calculate that sort of stuff in an exteremly arbitrary way.
ETA: I also assume that it's based purely on stats like BA, RBI, R, and FLD% rather than ones that give a more accurate picture of a player's performance.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
