Curt Schilling - S - Arizona Diamondbacks Sep 24
Curt Schilling has been scratched from his start scheduled for Friday and won't pitch again this season.
Schilling has been dealing with a neck problem, and now that the Diamondbacks are out of the race, there's no reason to use him. Elmer Dessens will move up to start Friday and Chris Capuano will pitch Saturday. Schilling finishes 8-9 with a 2.95 ERA in 24 starts. Despite this year's injury issues, he'll enter 2004 as a top-five pitcher.

Can I be free to drop Russ Ortiz (since he pitched tonight) and not worry that he'd be starting again?

Yeah, Ortiz is finished. He is pitching game 1 of the playoff series, so he won't pitch again.

Ortiz will not pitch again until the playoffs. Here's an article about it:
Ortiz to start Atlanta's playoff opener
September 24, 2003
ATLANTA (AP) -- Russ Ortiz will start Atlanta's first-round playoff game Tuesday.
Braves manager Bobby Cox said Wednesday that Ortiz (21-7) will be followed by Mike Hampton (14-8) and Greg Maddux (15-11).
Ortiz allowed three hits in five scoreless innings in the Braves' 9-1 win over Montreal later Wednesday night. He hasn't allowed a run in 14 straight innings.
The Braves, who won their 12th consecutive East title last week, will play the Central Division winner, likely to be either the Houston Astros or Chicago Cubs.

Now you can safely drop him.

Yes doctor, I am sick.
Sick of those who are spineless.
Sick of those who feel self-entitled.
Sick of those who are hypocrites.
Yes doctor, an army is forming.
Yes doctor, there will be a war.
Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
