When someone mentions Geraldo, it's usually a good sign that a thread has outlived its usefulness.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
Its a complete hack job by Wright Thompson taking things that were quoted in a laughing and joking context and making them out to be scathing attacks.
KC Star article wrote:“He said I wasn’t going to make the big leagues,” Pujols said, laughing, in the Cardinals clubhouse. “That’s why he got fired.”
Why did he get fired, if it wasn't for making Pujols upset?
“We made some decisions to go into a different direction in our scouting,” said Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty. “We rearranged some of our scouts, we let a few go, we hired a few ones, and Dave was a casualty of that restructure of our scouting. There were some scouts who were less productive than others.”
Tavish, I read the story on the STL website a few days ago, and was pretty bummed - it made Pujols seem unnessarily harsh. Your link to the other article changes a lot just by showing that Pujols was "laughing" while he made the statement.
Some things about Pujols that make him grate on people (as opposed to merely making him great), are that
- He does not suffer fools as well as other players - reporters that ask him stupid questions get curt answers;
- He sometimes has thin skin when criticized. I remember reading a few years ago about how a perceived weight problem helped keep scouts worried about him....and Pujols response was that the fears were silly, because it was "baby fat". Fair enough, but when multiple people are worried about your weight, its fair to think their concern MIGHT be legit.
- He's blunt to the point of being undiplomatic.
I also think he's very focused on his craft, and views distractions from that focus as an incovenience, albeit a neccessary one. Put that together with points 1-3 above, and you've got someone who is not going to be smooth with teh media all the time.
Anyway, that's just what I've been thinking over the last couple years as I've kind of noticed his rough patches.
