Arod stopped at 546......

Postby Madison » Wed Sep 24, 2003 6:27 pm

Arod's 546 consecutive games played streak has been stopped. Arod and Showalter spoke last night, and then again today about the streak and agreed to give Arod the day off and end the streak, that way it would not be an issue with the media next season.

Stinks. I wanted to see how far he could go. :-/

But how was it an issue. I mean it was only 546! ;-) :-D

Congrats Arod. I'm not sure if this will lower media attention, but still, it's quite a feat.
I'm back. Sorta.

The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram seemed to point out at least once a week that Arod hadn't had a game off since joining the Rangers. They have been talking about it down here for quite some time. Personally, it wasn't an issue for me. At least I figure we can count on him to play all 162 games next season. ;-D

Nice to know that he took a day off, even though at this point, he didn't really need to with only a few games left. Ripken's streak actually hurt the Orioles as he could have used a day or 2 off at times. He always said that he believed that you should be ready to play every day but there are times that everyone needs a rest. The streak became bigger than the club and that's no good.

Agreed. A lot of people here in DC think he really hurt the team.

Now, about Arod: To me, this makes no sense. If the record clearly wasn't important to him, then why didn't he sit out a few games at the start of the year--perhaps even go on the DL to get his back straightened out? It clearly affected him for a few months.

I'm sure it was done so that the team can start "fresh" next season. Leave everything behind and start over.

Thanks makes no sense to me. How can the best player in the game's consecutive game streak affect the team? It's not like he's all of a sudden getting media attention. It's not like they have someone better that should be playing...

Perhaps Showalter just wanted to make a statement to the young guys--no one is bigger than the team.

Wait a minute, Arod took a day off? There's no way he deserves MVP now!

Just kidding.

Hey, my boss doesn't come over to my cube and tell me I need a day off every once in a while. And I feel guilty taking days off! Imagine if I was getting paid over $150,000 per day of work, and I got half the year off anyway. I think I'd try to play every day too.

Actually, there has been quite a bit of media attention around here about Arod not having a single day off since joining the Rangers.

If your job involves taking balls to the chin (LOL :-D), getting spiked daily, getting hit by 90+ MPH pitches, and running around constantly while being expected to remain healthy, then you deserve some time off as well. I believe 100% that today's athletes are pampered beyond belief but even they need some time off occasionally.

Actually, everyone needs time off from work from time to time.
