Expectations for Hong-Chih Kuo

Postby PlayingWithFire » Sun Oct 22, 2006 10:19 am

Dodgers starter Hong-Chih Kuo(郭泓志, name means great ambition) was brilliant down the stretch for the Dodgers last year as a Starter(as opposed of being a reliever most of early 2006 and 2005). Posting a 3.05ERA as a starter. And I remember one particular outing where he was extremely unlucky(all the hits came in 1 inning, completely dominant the rest of the game. I think it was the Pirates). All in all, he burned bright late last year. He uses 4 pitches as far as I know, a fastball around 93, a slider around 85, a loopier slider around 80 and a below average changeup. His command wasn't all that stellar when I watched him(the Mets game). And he has absolutely no track record to talk about.

He came to the US have signed a 1.4million dollar contract with the Dodgers and at the time was thought to be more talented than Chien-Ming Wang. But he injured himself after his first pro starts and had to have TJ, he later had another TJ and pitched sporadically and unimpressively between 2001-2004. Then he broke out last year as a reliever and I believe moved quickly up the ladder.

Well, I've told you everything I know about him. What do you guys think what he'll do next year? The talent cannot be denied but there's huge risks too.

I think he's a good sleeper heading into 2007. I actually picked him up from the FA list for the stretch run in September and got some nice starts. I have no idea how he'll hold up over a full year of starting -- or even whether he'll be a full-time starter at all next year -- but he's got the skills to succeed and one of the guys I'll be watching in ST with an eye toward a late-round sleeper bid.

Other potential SP sleepers: Juan Cruz and Claudio Vargas. I would add Anthony Reyes to the list, but the word might be out on him after the world series. :-[
I am the Master. Don't question the Master. Just do what he says and be proud.

Kuo got an incredible high ceiling, but is still a risky pick, imo. I touted him earlier this year as a reliever, but he really struggled before being sent down to work as a SP. I can see him being Oliver Perez....I'm just not sure which version!

With his injury history and potential stamina issues, I think he will be a mediocre pitcher. Throws damn hard though.

Think of Kuo as the Dodgers' answer to Daniel Cabrera.

definetly sleeper material. he pretty much stopped walking people when he came up to become a starter which was the key to his success. with that dominant fastball and okay slider, as long as he doesnt go back to walking people, i see him being a great sleeper pick if he indeed remains in the rotation.

in his 6 outings as a starter to end the season, he had:

33.2 IP, only 9 BBs, and whopping 39 Ks. not bad at all.

Right now I don't think he's anything special.

Too many questions marks and he doesn't impress me. He'll be slightly above average imo.
