Sanitary Socks

Postby Coppermine » Thu Oct 19, 2006 9:29 pm

Tonight Buck and McCarver mentioned the sanitary socks that baseball players wear; I always knew they were called sanitaries, but I was never quite sure why. So I looked it up.

In baseball’s early days, the dyes used in stockings were not colorfast, so a spike wound could easily get an unhealthy dose of colored dye. Wearing a white stocking underneath the colored hose would help eliminate the problem, but the double thickness of socks meant that a player’s shoe no longer fit properly. The solution, introduced during the first decade of the 20th century, was the colored stirrup stocking. The innovative sock allowed for a protective layer of material around the leg but a single thickness of material in the shoe. Since the white stockings worn underneath the stirrup stockings provided a sanitary layer of protection, they were dubbed “sanitaries.”

More inciteful commentary from Buck and McCarver. All we need is Morgan on the air say "That's the key" about once every 5 minutes and then proclaiing how Donny Gullett was the greatest pither of all time.

Next up, what is pepper?

I figured I'd get a hard time for this; oh well, I think Buck and McCarver or losers as much as anyone else.

yeah, preferably some African American Jokes too ..

I mean whats left, in the last year, Lyons has made fun of the Jews, the handicapped and now hispanics, what could possibly be left to mock during a baseball game, other than making fun of the blacks.
