A's manager Ken Macha relieved of his duties

OAKLAND -- Oakland Athletics vice president and general manager Billy Beane announced today Ken Macha has been relieved of his duties as manager of the club.

Macha compiled a 368-280 record in four seasons as manager of the A's. He joined the Oakland organization in 1999 as bench coach and was named the 27th manager in franchise history on Oct. 29, 2002.

I heard it reported earlier that this might happen. Never really understood why.... I mean, getting swept is bad, but is it his fault Frank Thomas stunk?

I've read that he had bad relationships with his players so that's probably the main reason

Sure, let's fire the manager of 2nd place team in the AL. Yeah, that makes sense.

I've read that too. I've also read that he and Beane aren't the best of friends. I know they wanted to go in another direction last year, but ended up bringing him back. I guess that was the real mistake. Now they have to eat two more years worth of salary... Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but oh well...

I think Lou would be a better fit in Oak than Chitown.

I doubt Lou and Billy would get along... Whoever manages OAK is nothing more than a puppet.

If Lou was willing to be that far from Florida, he'd still be in Seattle.

I think what Oakland/Beane need is a do-nothing manager. The kind of guy who keeps the players happy and doesn't insist on diverging from the plan.

I think Macha only fulfilled one of those two obligations.
