If you have a wildcard, you have to give them a chance to compete. If teams compete, sometimes the higher seed loses. Rigging it to ensure the higher seed (read: Yankees) advances does no one any good.

The Championship Series used to be best of five and they changed it to best of seven in the mid-eighties. I hate that the divisional series is only five games. I understand all the common gripes about the playoffs already being too long, etc., but five games just seems too short. I hope they make the change.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
But see, the higher-seeded team deserves an advantage; it's really more fair because the better team will win if more games are played. Personally what I'd like to see is that the 8 "playoff" teams play a total of 28 games each against each other (each team plays every other team 4 times). It would also be done in 30 days so that it would be similar to the schedule during the regular season. The team with the best record during those 28 games would win the championship.

I don't want endless playoffs. Devalues the RS. Baseball is the one (American) sport where the regular season has meaning.
In any case, the higher seed doesn't always have the best record.
