That reminds me of all the Commie actors/entertainers who said they were leaving the US if Bush got re-elected... Where you at now, Alec Baldwin? Ain't no Hollywood in Canada is there?
Good god. They don't touch you, they don't curse at you. Are we seriously supposed to shield people from everything these days? We're supposed to maintain current troop levels until 2010 with this crap? These sheltered soldiers may crumble in the face of guerilla warefare and the insurgency.
My uncle was in the south vietnamese army. Not only did he get that treatment from the drill sergeants, sometimes he wasn't even fed properly or had solid equipment.
i think its mostly a good idea. people respond in different ways to that kind of stuff. its not a good idea to assume that being an abrasive prick will help you get the most out of a recruit. sometimes it will, but not all the time. the whole worthless maggot thing should be used sparingly (not totally abandoned). in my experience from athletics and coaching, it has diminishing effects the longer you use it. i've noticed the best results were achieved from regularly encouraging people rather than discouraging them. when they first mess up tell them what they did wrong and what they need to do in order to get it right. if they repeatedly mess up then you can get in their face and be a little more confrontational.
however, pushups from the knees should only be done if you are a girl. the new policy seems a little soft in some areas.
My buddy is a sergeant in the army, and I emailed him this article. This is his reply-
Yeah...I've heard these awful rumors. This crap only applies to the broads and to the people who are going into "support" roles (washing laundry, water purification, administration). Everyone else gets the same treatment that I did (I think).

They were doing something like this when I joined in '96. The drill sergeants had to give us a speech saying that they weren't allowed to swear or to touch us (like hitting touch... don't go there) anymore. We also had to sign paperwork saying we wouldn't sue any of the drill sergeants if they did do anything like that.
Speaking directly as a recruit, it was very demotivating to me, but that wasn't the worst part of this pacification of Boot Camp. More importantly, it emboldened many of the bad recruits to get lippy with the drill sergeants, to which they're only reply was often, "Get some Article XV paperwork going on this kid."
