What do you do? Driving question

I will generally let one person merge in front of me. I figure if everyone did the same, traffic would probably flow smoothly, but instead people don't allow anyone to merge, which causes bottlenecks and backs traffic up for hours...but it makes one person get to work 10 seconds earlier, so I guess it's worth it.

That's exactly what I do too. If I let everybody in then the people behind me would have my head, but if I let nobody in I'd die of a heart attack before I'm 40.

Do you let him in or do you keep so close to the bumper of the guy in front of you that he can't squeeze in?

I always allow mergers in front of me if they are legitimately merging into my lane. But somebody who jumps out of my lane to sneak in front of me I never allow in. I did this today and the guy trying to get in front of me got all pissed off and gave me the finger 8-o

As much as this pains me to say, I agree with you Mook. I would not have let that guy in whether he tried in front or the back of my car. I will slow down for the mergers that are not trying to cut in line though and give them a spot.

The one thing I have noticed though is if I am driving my old truck, nobody ever tries to cut in front of me, but if I am driving my wifes new Tahoe, everybody wants to cut in front. I guess they know that old truck just may not want to slow down. :-D

i think this is addressnig a separate piont. the original post was not s much about merging as it was linejumping. if we're talking just regular merge, the zipper method is the right way to go. if some guy is speeding past a bunch of people as the merging lane disappears, he can suck it.

Right, I agree. If I see someone in my side mirror flying up to cut at the front of the line, he's not getting in front of me. I saw someone slide their car over, halfway in the traffic lane and halfway in the 'cutting' lane. Worked pretty good. !+)

Yeah that's all me. Especially in the no man's land after the merge lane has ended but the road is still wide. People who don't get in line just to cut farther up are my enemies. I make my car as wide as possible. B-)

There is a merge lane to your right. This kind:

Did you expect mature behavior from an adult who never learned not to cut in line?

that pretty much sums it up

for me, it depends on my mood...i'm usually never in that big a hurry that letting some in...even an A-hole, isnt worth portentially getting in an accident trying to box him out

Thats what I do, but they better do it correctly, not off outside a driving lane. I am used to Los Angeles traffic. Ugh...Traffic on the 5 at 6pm. :-[
