Is Nevin the best mid-season surprise?

Personally, I considered it a no-brainer to pick up Nevin but I am probably biased because I am a Pads fan. He is a gamer and wouldn't have come back if he didn't think he could perform at a high level. Look out for the Fathers next season!!

Projecting numbers over a year creates problems

If you go by this logic, Karim Garcia should have 159 RBI this year.....and unfortunately I made the mistake of drafting him in a few leagues. The guy actually cried when he was traded to the Yanks. That's the cardinal sin; there's no crying in baseball.

This is a pretty good example of why you don't project stats - although it works quite nicely when you're trying to trade a player who starts the year on a hot streak, a la Reggie Sanders ;-D

I would think that people who picked him up and started him right away were probably thin at 3rd base. I did a search because I remember much more modest projections by many on this forum, me included:

I have to say, my best midseason pickup was Frank Thomas...

I picked him up about 4 weeks ago and haven't looked back. In CBS leagues he was eligible for 3 positions (1B, 3B, and OF) so I waited for him to heat up a few weeks back and inserted him in my 1B slot.

And I heard it first here about acquiring Nevin off of waivers for this very reason. ;-D

I think the season-ending injury to Klesko gave Nevin the full time job at 1B and he has responded quite nicely. Considering I had Klesko as my 1B player for most of the year, I'll take the extra hits, runs, and HR's he provided for me through my playoffs and into the championship game. :-D

I picked up Nevin when he first came back, and he solved my 3B problem, and even filled in nicely in the OF once he became eligible there.

I made some good deals that I actually would have been better going off of the WW. I could have picked up Nevin and Berroa earlier in the season and not had to deal for Furcal and Rolen. :~(
