Nothing like sittin down with an Arch Deluxe and a can of New Coke to play a game of updated Monopoly.
The thing is that I don't know if they really intend for it to compete with the older version, or if they really know it's going to be a limited time thing anyway like with all their other "anniversary" editions and whatnot. Or kinda like when your favorite cereal comes out with new styles - how long are Yogurt Burst Cheerios really going to be around.
My guess is that their sales have steadily dropped every year thanks to the times changing. Hard to keep an MTV attention span with a game nicknamed Monotony. Regardless, all this buzz over the new version probably results in higher sales for the old version too which makes it a can't-lose campaign.
And real players use the shoe.
