Best thread EVAR.
A more appropriate way to start this thread would be:
Subject: What are the chances Papelbon starts next year?
Text: I heard on ESPN news that he was going to start. Has anyone heard anything else about this? Do you think he will be more/less successful? What does this do to his value as a keeper/for redraft leagues?
And now to answer myself:
Re: What are the chances Papelbon starts next year?
Well, I think this has always been the Sox's plan for him; he was thrown into the closers role this year as a stop-gap. I think he's got 3 or 4 pitches, so provided he can hold up for the season, I think he should do alright in the role. Perhaps not as lights-out as this year, but he should do okay. If he's successful, I think it makes him more valuable, but I see him turning into a #2/#3 guy next year rather than a #1.
Personally, I traded him early this year in my keeper league for Danny Haren and an upgrade in minor leaguers, and I'm still okay with the deal. I see Paps as about as good as Haren next year, so I feel like I got a free upgrade in minor leaguers. 'Course, Paps is a bit younger and he's got less MLB experience, so he's got higher upside than Haren in all likelyhood.
