i.e I just snmoked a big fatty, and I saw the future, and papelbon was the Opening Day SP in Boston.....

or.....

The Red Sox just traded Manny to the Yankees for Mariano and that forced the Red Sox to put Papelbon in the rotation.....

Well, it doesn't take Nostradamus to figure the Red Sox are going to need starters next season. Wakefield and Schilling are aging and they've had such pitching luminaries like Jason Johnson and Larry DiNardo at the back of the rotation, stinking it up. They need all the pitching help they can get.

This has been common knowledge since mid september, when paplebon hurt his shoulder in early september.

Well, I think this has always been the Sox's plan for him; he was thrown into the closers role this year as a stop-gap. I think he's got 3 or 4 pitches, so provided he can hold up for the season, I think he should do alright in the role. Perhaps not as lights-out as this year, but he should do okay. If he's successful, I think it makes him more valuable, but I see him turning into a #2/#3 guy next year rather than a #1.

Personally, I traded him early this year in my keeper league for Danny Haren and an upgrade in minor leaguers, and I'm still okay with the deal. I see Paps as about as good as Haren next year, so I feel like I got a free upgrade in minor leaguers. 'Course, Paps is a bit younger and he's got less MLB experience, so he's got higher upside than Haren in all likelyhood.
