Who will win the award this year? Noone really stands out. Ortiz has 20 wins but a high Era, Scmidt has had a great year but not enough wins, Gagne has been awesome but will a reliver win? there have been others but the 3 of them stand out and all have something against there favor. Just looking for opinions.
Gagne or Prior will win and Schmidt will finish 3rd. Ortiz might get 4th in the voting.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
As much as I 'd like to have both Cy Young winners on my roto team, I couldn't vote for Prior over Schmidt. Prior was best after getting his little rest and getting his arm re-vitalized. Schmidt didn't get that break. Oriz doesn't make my top 3.
Schmidt
Gagne (RP shouldn't win it, but no-one is clear cut winner)
Prior (I hope him and Roy bring home the hardware for my squad)

i know most ppl dont think a RP should win CY but what Gagne has done for the leagues worst offensive team makes what he's done for his team even more important. If i had to choose i'd go with Gagne for Cy. Without Gagne, LA isnt even close to be in the hunt for the playoffs. Then Prior,Schimdt and maybe even Wagner will get some attention along with Ortiz.
Yeah, all things being equal, I wouldn't want them to give it to a reliever, but all things are not equal. No pitcher in baseball has been better than Gagne this year. He's been amazing, and I think he deserves to win it.
After that, I'd probably give the nod to Schmidt over Prior, partly due to a sympathy vote (and Schmidt did have a short break due to the bereavement list... in fact, I think they created it specifically for him, IIRC). Ortiz is definitely 4th in my mind.
i give the nod to schmidt. his era and whip #'s are unreal. and his team has been dominant. prior is a close 2nd, but i think jason just deserves it. noone has been dominant like he has over the last 2 years. if it weren't for his poor run support this wouldn't even be a question. if schmidt had the same #'s with say 18 or 19 wins no one would doubt he should win it. same reasoning for ranking ortiz 4th. gagne has been great, but his team is going to miss the playoffs and i am against giving it to a reliever.
Here are all the Cy Young award winners who won less than 20 games (starters only):
Tom Seaver (1973) 19-10, 2.08 ERA
Fernando Valenzuela (1981), 13-7, 2.48 ERA*
Rick Sutcliffe (1984), 16-1, ERA 2.69
Mike Scott, (1986), 18-10, ERA 2.22
Roger Clemens (1991) 18-10, ERA 2.62
Greg Maddux (1994), 16-6, ERA 2.36*
David Cone (1994), 16-5, ERA 2.94*
Greg Maddux (1995), 19-2, ERA 1.62*
Randy Johnson (1995), 18-2, ERA 2.48*
Pedro Martinez (1997), 17-8, ERA 1.90
Randy Johnson (1999), 17-9, ERA 2.48
Pedro Martinez (2000), 18-6, ERA 1.74
Randy Johnson (2000), 19-7, ERA 2.64
*shortened season
So there have been 13 Cy Youngs given to pitchers that won less than 20 games. However five of them came in shortened seasons. However I don't see giving the Cy Young to a 17 game winner as a problem. So either Prior or Schmidt are strong candidates fo the Cy Young.
