Hillary Clinton's anti-torture speech - 9/28/06

Postby noseeum » Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:07 pm

However you feel about her, this is one pretty powerful speech.

Republican, democrat, independent, whatever. You can not stand for torture and call yourself a patriot of this country. It violates everything we stand for.

I agree, but I also don't think that everything is black or white. That goes for ANYTHING. You're also opening a can of worms with this !+)

Nice. :-D Let's see the worms!

It's been black and white since 1776. This whole idea that it's confusing is BS. The military has never been confused about what's right and what's wrong until this Adminstration caused the confusion. Before Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld, EVERYONE our military encountered was afforded Geneva Convention protection. If they weren't, our soldiers were punished. Very black and white.

Wow... "Military" and "never confused" in the same sentence. I don't know where to start disagreeing with you.

I believe that one of the flaws of our administration is that they do see everything as a black and white issue, and that there is little room for discussion, debate or otherwise democratic processes to determine what is "right vs. wrong" within a reasonable margin. I'm not arguing your point, I agree, however to suggest that anything is "one or the other" would make me a hypocrite, and I simply support some open-ended discussion on the issue rather than having to simply abide by "the decider."

Open-ended discussion; now that is what makes someone a patriot. And also that the military is OVERWHELMINGLY confused.

Yes, I saw the speech. And, yes, I agree with you that she is absolutely right. There can be no black and white in this.

"Treat them with humanity, and let them have no reason to complain of our Copying the brutal example of the British Army in their Treatment of our unfortunate brethren."- George Washington

Torture is wrong. Torture is ineffective. Torture is hurting the United States.

I've never been a big fan of Hillary's but this speech puts me in her corner (for now). I always thought she was a bit of an opportunist but this is an unpopular view that she's espousing, unfortunately. I wonder what the backlash will be.

Hillary speaking, in itself, is a form of torture.

Good call.

She is just trying to make herself out as an angle and republicans out as devils. I would vote for a member of the communist party, if it meant that she not get elected.
