It's caught up in a lot of red tape. The trouble with seeing The Hobbit on the big screen is that New Line, the producers of LOTR, want to make the movie and they want Peter Jackson to direct it. Unfortunately, MGM owns the rights to the movie, plus Peter Jackson is getting way tied up with a bunch of other projects. If it ever happens it's years away from today.
