At this point last year, I identified three players to go after in the middle rounds of my drafts and to structure my who draft strategy around: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, and Kris Benson. Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
So, who are these guys for next year? Guys who should still be around in rounds 8-15 but have a chance to make blue chip numbers? New roles, hot second halves, etc.? I don't really have as good a handle on it this year as I did last year, but maybe we can compile a list.
Eric Hinske? He's having a very good last month. He's batting .313 in September with 5 SB's.
Rich Harden? Do we believe in him enough to make him a #3 starter?
Brian Roberts/Jerry Hairston? I'll be watching to see what happens in Baltimore. They might both get a job if they switch around.
Kelvim Escobar? Dude's ERA is 3 points higher at HOME. If he's playing for another team next year, look out.
I think Albert Pujols is a good middle-round pick.
Seriously.... Some of my picks:
Joe Crede -- met expectations lately. Took long enough.
Carlos Lee -- very quiet 30 HR/20 SB season...
Craig Wilson -- bad platoon split, but probably .260/35/90 power, and C/1B/OF eligibility.
Livan Hernandez -- ERA still below 3. Ace for hire.
Kip Wells -- 3.58 or so ERA, good WHIP, and he's still only 26. Bad news is that he has a losing record because he gets no run support at all.
Dimitri Young -- has Aubrey Huff potential. Baggy uniform is a bit of a turnoff though.
Nick Johnson -- can he stay healthy? If he can, he inherits that coveted #2 spot in the Yankees order, in front of Jeter and Giambi. May even be moved to leadoff.
Pat Burrell -- he isn't this bad, is he? Decent sleeper, but there's obviously some risk involved.
Jason Kendall -- will fit right into the #2 spot of a team that can afford him. .400 OBP, .325 average, even 10 or so steals... If you've got your power production covered he's a top 5 catcher.
Fransisco Cordero -- don't expect a gazillion saves, but he will have good K numbers.
I can't see santana slipping that far. And Harden will probably be picked in round 6 or so I think, maybe earlier.
Nick Johnson definitely. Another guy is David Ortiz, but I don't think he'll slip that far either. My mid-round sleeper is Miguel Cabrera. He'll be eligible at 3B and should put up solid numbers.
there are people who dont even know santana. i think round 8-10 is a reasonable round to steal santana. a pitcher with an era over 4.00 shouldnt even be considered to be picked in the 6th round even if it is harden

well, maybe ur right about harden (although his era is a little inflated due to boston and toronto), but if Santana's still there in the 4th or 5th, im grabbing him. I think people are going to start finding out who he is when they do their homework for next year.
