I guess Tool is the closest current band to Pink Floyd, but Floyd was so popular that it's hard to compare any group to them.
I'm not a huge Mogwai fan personally, I saw them live though and they were pretty cool. I'm more into Godspeed You Black Emperor.
I agree that, while Tool is obviously an extremely talented band, and that Maynard is perhaps the best thing to music since Roger Waters, you have to realize that popularity wise, Pink Floyd trumps all. To this very day, Dark Side of the Moon is one of the 100 best selling albums, not all time, but NOW. I personally purchased an SACD version of the album for its 30th anniversary. I still don't have the equipment to enjoy it in all its splendor, but DSOTM is the only album on Earth that, to this day, I sometimes kick back on the back porch and listen to from beginning to end. Dark Side is also my album of choice when flying... anytime I take a flight, particularly to visit my parents from Harrisburg to West Palm Beach, I have my trusty Dark Side of the Moon CD ready to go. I can't think of anything on Earth more calming and enjoyable. To this day, after about a millions listens, The Great Gig In the Sky gives me shivers. And to that extent, the clocks going off at the beginning of "Time" scare the shizz out of me.
Tool is a great band, but Pink Floyd is incomparable. So what's the deal... is the Wizard of Oz syncro real.... or a coincidence???
If you're a battery, you're either working or you're dead....
