Tool = Pink Floyd?

Postby Simulacrum » Thu Sep 14, 2006 5:10 pm

I saw Tool last weekend, they were phenomenal as usual. One of my friends mentioned between songs that with their long, epic songs, themed albums, and insanely trippy visuals and live stage shows, they could be the Pink Floyd of the next generation.

What I mean by that is, I can see our children looking upon Tool as I have always looked upon Pink Floyd. Older, classic, different, awesome. Our kids will want to borrow our old Tool shirts for the same reason we always wanted to wear our parents old Pink Floyd shirts.

Anyone else agree with what I'm getting at here?

They are definitely one of the better 'modern' bands, that's for sure. You may be right about next generations enjoying Tool like we enjoy PF. Themes tend to occur every 20 years or so I think.

Yea I've always thought that. I actually passed up my tickets last month to see them though. Cause I saw them a few months back on their small club tour and the set was exactly the same.

It was also like 60 bucks a ticket.

They rule live though..The new album i've started to find a bit depressing.

I think that they will be the next floyd type head trip legend band our kids like.

"Get of your * cross we need the * space to nail the next fool marytr."

I love that line

I think Dream Theater is closer to Pink Floyd than Tool is, but DT is more in vein of what prog rock/metal is about. I find DT a lot more enjoyable than listening to Tool as well. I don't understand the allure of why someone would be a Tool fan, but that's just me.

interesting, i always thought dream theater was more rush like.

I see the point about Tool being the new pink floyd, i'm guessing that's what's being said and not a direct comparrison.

I saw tool at an Oz fest show, pretty freaking insane. I'd see em again.

Well Maynard is smart and pissed off and his music is a mix of Prog, Trip, Metal, and poetry

Yes, that's what I meant. DT tends to be more in the vein of traditional prog rock bands such as Rush in terms of sound, but I've tended to believe DT has some of its roots with Pink Floyd, as with all prog bands basically.

I suppose I don't like Tool just because it's either too poetic for my taste or I'm just not fond of Maynard's voice (even though I like A Perfect Circle a little better). I know I can't take a second of listening to Tool's Schism. It all just sounds so dull to me. Maynard's lyrics are thought-provoking, but I look at Tool the same way I look at Radiohead: it just seems accessible to yuppies and posers looking for a mind trip.

so basically they got popular so you cant like them.

i like this comparision actually. floyd is obviously timeless and i believe tool will be looked at in a lot of the same ways someday.

these cafe's are running high on comparisions lately.

vanderjagt = lidge is still the best!

Actually, I never liked Tool in the first place. :-D Same goes for Radiohead. They're both too subdued for my liking. I like Pink Floyd somewhat, but I see 99 out of 100 people relating to PF's song and I'm the odd man out. ;-D
