Unlikely Closers

Postby htmt519 » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:24 pm

Hello ... I'm trying to pick up one more closer for the stretch run in my rotisserie league. Are there any closers out there that are "under the radar" (i.e. injury replacement, bad team, september call-up...) that may be available on the waiver wire?

Post yours and I'll respond.

Thanks,
MT

Within the last couple of weeks I've picked up...
Mike Stanton - SFG
Joe Nelson - KCR
Salomón Torres - PIT
Braden Looper - STL

Missed out on....
Tom Mastny - CLE
Justin Duchscherer - OAK

plus whoever is closing in Cincinnati. They've only had one save since August 13th (David Weathers).

Cleveland has actually been playing good lately so if Mastny's available in your league I'd go with him.

Nelson is the only one on your list available. He has 5 saves since Aug. 15th. Worth it?

That's your call. It depends on who you have to drop to get him. Actually I just dropped Looper and picked up Wainwright for St. Louis because I heard he will get first crack at replacing Izzy.

There's a rumor that Valverde might have his job back as closer for the diamondbacks. Haven't seen anything to comfirm.

Confirmation from CBS Sportsline:
Manager Bob Melvin said RHP Jose Valverde (2-3, 6.64) will return to the closer's role. Valverde has gone 2.0 innings in each of his last five outings since being recalled to Arizona from Triple-A Tucson, giving up just two earned runs. "Since we've seen him come back, he's used his off-speed stuff a little bit better," Melvin said. Valverde's last save came May 24 against Pittsburgh

Just noticed that the last save for D-Backs was Aug 12. Ugh.
