Draft pick idea..

Postby cannonarm21 » Thu Sep 07, 2006 10:22 pm

Just thought I would share this tradition we have in our league.

Every year we have a little "draft lottery" that ties in the baseball playoffs. We have a 10 team league, and the 8 teams left that don't play in the championship have a little draft among the 8 teams that make the actual MLB playoffs. Whoever finishes last gets his first choice of MLB teams that he thinks will win the World Series.

Ex. I finish last..I "draft" the Mets 1st overall. If the Mets win the World Series, I pick 1st in our draft next year. For tiebreakers we use playoff games won.

We always have a lot of fun with it. Gives us a reason to watch the playoffs with a little more interest. Also makes you root for a team you normally may not.

Hope this makes sense, I may have not explained it the best.

Say the Mets beat the Dodgers to go to the the World Sreies, and the Yankees beat the A's to also go to the World Series. The tiebreaker for the 3rd pick (between the A's and Dodgers) would be total playoff games won. So obviously your team takes a hit if it gets swept in 4 as opposed to losing a series 4-3 or something.

What if both the Dodgers and A's lose in the same number of games

I agree that it can be interesting...maybe as a side bet. How does this relate to the owner's performance during the fantasy season?

Sounds good to me...
It ties into the regular season because the worst ranked team picks 1st (allowing them to choose the team they believe is the strongest contender). This seems like a good way to insure that everyone pays attention all year long and doesn't try to tank as much, because everyone knows the playoffs is a crapshoot (pretty much), so that last place doesn't guarantee a top pick.
