He's not eligible for the postseason if picked up. That's why David Wells had to be traded by 8/31-- because his real value is as a "gamer" in October baseball (someone who will want the ball in the postseason and will give you 6+ IP and 1-2 ER).
Chris Iannetta was born on Krypton and transported to Earth as an infant and saves the universe when he's not getting on base every plate appearance.

Nonetheless, he has good value for teams in the playoff hunt. Like Yanks2000 said, he is not really good MLB starter anymore, but he is better than the end of almost anyone's bench.

probably worth a pickup for a team in the hunt that needs a pinch hitter or DH right now... Then just release him after the regular season if he's a problem in the clubhouse

"Performance Related" is definitely BS. If that was the truth, they'd just bench him and play somebody else. Cutting him at this time of the year doesn't make any room on the roster.

I'm disappointed -- but not at all surprised -- at the awful job the DET press has done getting to the bottom of this. One of the 2 papers here ran a pretty nasty column basically saying that the Tigers are lying about the rationale. (i.e. all of the sudden the guy you were batting third has a performance problem?) but there has been no solid reporting to date.
Todd Jones was quoted as saying that he doesn't it think it has anything to do with substance abuse and that Young has been sober the past 100 days.
Also, Young announced to the team that he had been released -- hugged a few of his friends and left. Apparently no big clubhouse scene or fiasco that perciptated this. Very odd.

Was he a free agent after this season? If not, are the Tigers still responsible for the rest of his contract?

They had a $8.5MM option for 2007, but have to pay the rest of his 2006. Whoever picks him up can do so for the ML minimum.

I read this on Sportscenter and thought, "Why? Is Detroit on crack?"
Still no real explanation. And Detroit can bring up a minor leaguer from the 40-man roster I think to replace Young on the postseason roster.

Must be a tough household with Delmon so highly touted.
