Press release from the Tigers releasing Young hit the wires at 7:30. This is an unexpected move to say the least. His performance has not been great but far from "releaseable".
Two posssibilities 1) it is related to his recent off-field problems 2) he may have (over)reacted to getting pinch hit for earlier today.
Regardless, odd.

You bet. It feels like a spiteful cut -- a la Hillenbrand.
As if the Tigers don't have enough problems with offense.....

This could give Thames more playing opportunities, at the DH spot anyways.

Dombrowski was quoted as saying it was "performance related", but releasing a guy immediately following a game where he hit third just doesn't happen too often.
Barring any clubhouse situations (good or bad, we really have no clue what was going on behind the scenes here), the team will be fine. Shelton and/or Thames are capable of producing about as well as Young could and are capable of playing the field and running the bases.

Something is up wrt to him. I can't imagine a playoff/contending team is going to cut a serviceable hitter at this point in the season. Even off the bench Young would be a better option than whoever their 25th man is.

I don't know about that. Thames was doing fine for the Tigers when Young was out. I think they'll be just fine for the playoff run without Young on the roster, because, like it was said before, they have the players that can step up to the plate to hit and run the bases for them.

Would be a good pick up for the Yanks... It has to be an off the field incident.
