Taxi Driver lost to Rocky. Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People. Goodfellas lost to Dances with Wolves. Gangs of New York lost to Chicago (which was a joke in this guy's opinion). The Aviator loses to Million Dollar Baby. He really has gotten tough, tough breaks. He was probably more deserving for those films but I guess it all works out in the end.
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

Yeah I think Taxi, Bull, Good Fellas, Gangs and Aviator were all better than The Departed. I'm probably in the minority though.

Taxi Driver was better than Rocky but the academy really liked to play it safe then; same thing with Ragine Bull and Goodfellas... they also lost to good, but "safe" films. Chicago winning best picture was an absolutely tragedy and I think since then they've been giving the award to riskier films, which is why Crash won last year much to many people's disappointment.
The Aviator was good, but I thought Million Dollar Baby was better.
I thought Departed was better than The Aviator and Gangs, but not Goodfellas, Taxi Driver or Raging Bull.

I haven't seen this movie but I can't see any gangstar movie being better then Goodfellas

Not sure Goodfellas is in my Top 5 but it's close. As much as I love Goodfellas, The Godfather will always be the ultimate gangster movie to me.

I'd say Goodfellas is better than The Departed, not sure about Taxi Driver. Gangs of NY was good, but I'd say Goodfellas and The Departed are better. I've never seen Raging Bull, it's one of those on my list of movies I have to see along with The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby.
