1.)Yankees
Reasons well not that money is even a factor with the Yankees but Sheffeild wont be in pinstripes again next year. Plus pitching help is what they need, I'm 99.(% sure they have Zito on the target list for them.
2.) Mets
Reasons Pedro is old and breaking down (Please dont bash me and try to deny it.) Glavine most likely wont be there next year and they have no pitching. I am sure that after they lose in the playoffs they will say lets get some pitching and Zito is a prime fit for them
3.)Dodgers
Reasons Colletti is trying to build this team back up and he knows pitching will do it. Zito will mkae a perfect "ACE" on that staff and he likes the west coast already
Other possibilites are Angels and Giants. Giants will have ALOT of money free'ed up this off season and will be shopping.
“Never argue with a idiot, because first they will bring you down to their level. Then beat you with experience.”
I think the front runner is easily the Mets. Having Rick Peterson as their pitching coach, who Zito credits for much of his success, is too great of a factor to ignore. I think 5 year 75-80 million will be the total cost.
Depending on what Zito does in the playoffs, I could easily see him getting more than 5/80. Oswalt was nearly that expensive, even with an in-season hometown discount. Someone like the Mets or Yankees, who will both be in serious need of an ace, could bid the price up to something like 6/100.
...Only quality SP on the market in 07
...Boras as his agent
...Most big market teams need pitching help
You are looking at 5/75 to start the bidding imo. In reality, it will likely go to 5/85 (17 M a season). It is insane, but unless both NY teams decide not to get involved in it, it is inevitable. Yanks, Boston, Mets, Dodgers, Giants, WSox could all get involved. The Angels I think will concentrate on getting a couple of much needed bats.
I think the Giants would be foolish not to go after him. With a veteran young pitcher like Zito to guide Lowry, Cain and Lincecum, they would be ridiculous in 2-3 years.
