It gets rid of unneeded salary, brings in either cash or a player that may be useful in the future and makes Wells happy. It also gives the team a chance to throw some rookies out there to see what they've got instead of trotting (I'm being generous now as Wells doesn't trot...he barely walks) out Boomer every 5 days.

No, we reportedly got minor league catcher George Kottaras who is rated the #2 prospect in San Diego's farm system. He's a lefty hitter who throws righty and it's said that he's good defensively. He's projected to either backup or start in 2007 and if not 2008.

So that means they are either giving up on Tek, or the injury is worse than they are making it out to be...

Sox giving up and the Pads going for the wild card. I think Wells can really help them.

Report in the North County (San Diego) Times is that Kottaras is indeed the man, he's to be named later only so the Pads don't have to put him on waivers to complete the deal. At the end of the season he's a Red Sock.
And I don't think they're giving up on Tek at all, more like giving up on Mirabelli/Wake/Lopez. Remember, we traded Shoppach and Bard this year and have little left in the queue...
