Wow. Great deal for the Sox. His component numbers are excellent and it looks like he's got some power, too. I guess the Pads are kinda set at C for a while, but I'm still surprised to see them give up this much.

I won't even pretend to know anything about the catcher SD gave up, but wasn't he hitting like .216 in the minors this season?

I have a hard time believing Kottaras cleared waivers...both Red Sox and Padres.com have it as a PTBNL or cash.

If Kottaras is not on the 40-man roster, he doesn't have to clear waivers. And I doubt he's on the 40-man, seeing as he was just called up to AAA.

I wouldn't be surprised if the deal was for a PTBNL, but I bet the Sox got better offers than cash.

Padres.com 40 man roster has both Kottaras and Wells on it. I really don't think he was dealt.

Not that I really know the legal side of it, but do they ever go out and say who it is? The only time you know is if

A. They clear waivers and are of course traded

B. It gets reported from the media

the offical word is always PTBNL...

I also think it may be too good to be true (or in your case too bad) but you never know with the price of pitching, a proven veteran and a playoff proformer even if it is a rental.
