Update: Red Sox manager Terry Francona doesn't think the team will have to shut Lester (back) down for the rest of the season, the Providence Journal reports.

Recommendation: The organization may not shut him down, but Lester's innings and fatigue factor will be monitored closely in September. "He's going to miss a start," Francona said. "Then we get into September (when rosters expand). We just think it's in his best interests to do this (put him on the DL). If we have to shut him down we would. He's a very big part of our future. We've asked a lot of him. We don't want to hurt this kid for the future. He's too valuable."

I was listening to Francona on the radio yesterday before the game. He wouldn't come out and say it, quoting that Lester and his family deserve privacy, but he said that all they could hope for is the absolute best results from these tests. Sounded pretty scary. I hope the poor kid is okay.

Aug 31 Ian Browne, of Boston.RedSox.MLB.com, reports Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester (back), who was sent back to Boston earlier this week to undergo tests on his back, will have more tests, however these could be for more serious ailments, including cancer. According to the report, Lester was "diagnosed with enlarged lymph nodes... Such a symptom can be caused by an array of issues, from infections to cancer." The club released a statement confirming several abnormally enlarged lymph nodes had been found.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma is one of a group of cancers known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said Dr. Robert Soiffer, chief of the division of hematologic malignancies at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

"It is a disease that can strike at any age," said Soiffer, who is not involved in Lester's treatment. "It's responsive to chemotherapy and very treatable."

The Boston Red Sox announced Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, that pitcher Jon Lester has a treatable form of lymphoma.

Prognosis depends on the stage at which the disease is caught, Soiffer said. Age can also play a limited role in determining a patient's outcome, he said.

"In general, younger patients ... have a better prognosis than older ones," Soiffer said.
