M. Gonzo case of "deadarm"

Postby Mreater71 » Mon Aug 28, 2006 2:20 pm

What in the world is "dead arm"? Never heard of this usage. Does it mean that his arm was just tired and wasn't at full strength?

I think Tracey used him like four out of five days or something like that. He should be fine. A few nights off in a row can only be a good thing at this point in the season. I'm thinking he'll be feeling well again by mid-week!

Here's the latest update I read, and this was from earlier today:

Aug 28 Ed Eagle, of Pirates.MLB.com, reports Pittsburgh Pirates CL Mike Gonzalez (dead arm) threw a side session on flat ground Sunday, Aug. 27, and he hopes to back at full strength for the upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs. Gonzalez developed a case of dead arm after saving three games in three nights last Tuesday through Thursday

From Rotowire:

Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow tendinitis, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

He had saved three games in a row last week and then wasn't available to pitch over the weekend. This move comes as a surprise. It was thought that a few days rest would cure his dead arm, but that was not the case. The Pirates will likely go with a combination of relievers to close out games, depending on matchups. Look for Matt Capps, Salomon Torres and perhaps John Grabow to figure in on the closer's role while Gonzalez is out. It's not yet clear how much time Gonzo will miss.

I like Capps...his home run rate is kind of high but the k/bb ratio is insanely good.
