Iannetta called up!

Chris Iannetta-C-Rockies Aug. 26 - 1:24 am et

Rockies purchased the contract of catcher Chris Iannetta from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

We're not sure what the hurry was. Yorvit Torrealba continues to play very well and should enter 2007 as the Rockies' starting catcher. Iannetta is the future behind the plate for the club, but he doesn't deserve to start over Torrealba right now, even if he was hitting .336/.433/.567 in 307 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A this year. Two-catcher NL-only leaguers could pick him up and see what happens.

Are the Rockies desperate for some catching depth right now, or are they just going with a youth movement here? I know who Iannetta is and all, but I just don't follow the Rockies.

Torealba is hitting and catching fine right now, but the backup (Danny Ardoin) just plain sucks so why not bring Ianetta up? He should get experience now and be the starter next year.

Yeah, I'd say so. Might be a back up eventually.

Ianetta's first start will be tomorrow I think.

With Torrealba playing well, I don't see a point in bringing Iannetta up. Let him stay in Colorado Springs and get the AB's instead of splitting time in the bigs.

Maybe, but I think the major league experience will help him more than hurt him, and Danny Ardoin was just a hole in the team.

I think it is a good move. As a catcher, he's not going to just sit ala Howie Kendrick when he got called up the first time. He'll get approx 2 starts a week, get to pinch hit and stay in during double switches. And even on the bench he'll be able to get accustomed to the big league staff to get him ready for next year. Finally, they could use another hot bat...

Ianetta went 1-4 with an RBI in his first career start today. He was solid defensively and called a good game.

He was robbed of an RBI in his first AB when Adrian Gonzalez made a leaping grab.

What I noticed is he really works the count. I believe all ABs he had at least a 3-2 count and fouled off a lot of pitches when he had 2 strikes on him.
