Verlander is Sports Illustrated's cover subject in this week's edition, which hits stands today. The rookie right-hander is shown in a follow-through. The cover line reads: "Bring It."
The story, by Tom Verducci , focuses on baseball's stable of excellent rookie starting pitchers and begins with a vignette centered on a conversation last week in Boston between Verlander and 1976 Tigers rookie phenom Mark Fidrych .
"Only 14 pitchers, 25 and under have won a postseason start, and none of the 88 postseason teams in the wild-card era have had two 25-and-under starters win games in the same postseason," the article read.
"With Verlander and fellow 23-year-old flamethrower Jeremy Bonderman , the Tigers are attempting to alter that history," it continued.
