Aug 18 - The Detroit Tigers do not plan to use a six-man rotation when SP Mike Maroth (elbow) is activated from the disabled list, even though he is expected to have his final minor league rehab start Saturday, Aug. 19, according to the Associated Press.
What does this mean??? No more Miner??
I don't necessarily believe that article to be true until I see it. I can see a couple of different things happening.
1) 6 man rotation - The pitching staff has shown signs of tiring. This would *probably* work better in September when the bullpen is bigger due to expended rosters. The bullpen has been getting worked in the second half and using one of those starters shortens the pen.
2) Miner moves to bullpen and Maroth gets rotation spot - Miner hasn't necessarily done anything to lose his job, but he rarely gives long outings and makes the bullpen work more. Most of the time, we're lucky to get 6 full innings out of Miner. Of course, I doubt Maroth will initially be an innings eater as he gets back into form...
Less likely is a scenario where we could see Maroth start out in the pen as he gets back to form, but I doubt it. I'm guessing on option 2....at least until September, where we might give option 1 a look.
