Mike Maroth - Does he fit into the Tigers rotation???

Postby CoopernicusX » Thu Aug 17, 2006 10:34 pm

I read that he will make just one more rehab start. With Rogers, Bonderman, Robertson, Verlander, and Miner...who would get bumped? They have all pitched well. I know Verlander is tired lately. I just don't know if I should scoop him. I would like to grab another pitcher who is pitching "for something" in Sept. for the playoffs.

Any thoughts???

Miner gets bumped to long relief OR they go 6 man rotation maybe to give a tough worked staff some breathing room

once maroth is ready to go he will start over miner one way or another

Yeah, Miner's days of domination are over this season. I dont know how he got off to as good of a start as he did considering his limited strike out abilities.

The Tigers are considering going to a 6 man rotation when Maroth comes back.

I picked up Maroth and threw him on my DL spot two weeks ago ;-D

I am anticipating his return to the rotation. All I am really looking for is he stay in the game as long as possible. He has been known to go deep into the game which obviously gives him the chance to get the win...

I, too, am a member of the "I picked up Maroth and put him on my DL two weeks ago" club. Looking forward to a fresh arm jumping back into the Tigers rotation since I have Verlander as well.

Today I read this...

Aug 18 - The Detroit Tigers do not plan to use a six-man rotation when SP Mike Maroth (elbow) is activated from the disabled list, even though he is expected to have his final minor league rehab start Saturday, Aug. 19, according to the Associated Press.

What does this mean??? No more Miner??

I don't necessarily believe that article to be true until I see it. I can see a couple of different things happening.
1) 6 man rotation - The pitching staff has shown signs of tiring. This would *probably* work better in September when the bullpen is bigger due to expended rosters. The bullpen has been getting worked in the second half and using one of those starters shortens the pen.
2) Miner moves to bullpen and Maroth gets rotation spot - Miner hasn't necessarily done anything to lose his job, but he rarely gives long outings and makes the bullpen work more. Most of the time, we're lucky to get 6 full innings out of Miner. Of course, I doubt Maroth will initially be an innings eater as he gets back into form...

Less likely is a scenario where we could see Maroth start out in the pen as he gets back to form, but I doubt it. I'm guessing on option 2....at least until September, where we might give option 1 a look.
