Since their only other option to get Wells out of the rotation now that Claussen and Hitchcock are gone would be to use Weaver, I doubt he loses his spot this year, since Weaver has been absolute garbage all year.
I would bench him in a fantasy league until he has a good start though.
You have to think that Wells' back is bothering him. He has an incentive in his contract that gives him (I don't know the exact amount, but its well over $100,000) per start. I have to think he's been pitching through pain when he shouldn't be pitching, to pick up the extra money (this was suggested by a host of WFAN a few days ago, but I forget which host it was). I think the back and old age is catching up to him and those are the main reasons for his poor outings.
I'm pretty sure he gets a bonus of $183,000 per start right now and is also working to kick in something like a 7 million salary next year if he gets enough starts this year.
All about the money instead of taking a week or two off to get healthy.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
Anyone willing to sell out his teammates and club in a tell-all book for a few thousand bucks is certainly capable of going to the mound injured to make a few thousand more.
However I believe that his back isn't entirely the problem anymore.
He is simply worn down.
He's fat and forty.
There's only so long you can perform at the ML level with those two devils on your shoulder. It gets harder as the season goes on as you don't have time for your body to ever truly recover ... and believe me, the older you are, the longer the recovery time!
I'll take Wells ... He would look good pitching back home in San Diego. And how cool is it that "Petco Park" borders the "Gaslamp District" which is basically 75% of San Diegos night life. He and Beck could share an Apartment downtown. All three within walking, or stumbling distance of each other
I've always thought Wells was overrated myself. Career 4.07 era including this year, and he's not getting any younger.
