Cuz he looks like a huge side of beef hanging from a hook? That's what I always thought anyway. :-)

I'm not quite sure either, though the first two words are easy to figure out. Just say his first name, it's sound like "Da Meat" ... just not sure about the "Hook" part.

Have you ever seen him round the bases after a HR...It looks like he makes a little hook with his hand. It's kind of funny actually..

That could be why he is called da meat hook, but I always thought it was because that phrase is pronounced almost the same way as his first name:
