Orioles acquired RHP Denny Bautista and RHP Don Levinski from the Marlins for first baseman-outfielder Jeff Conine.
We haven't thought much of their free-agent signings, but along with the Sidney Ponson and Chris Richard deals, this is the third great trade the Orioles have made this season. Conine had just a 799 OPS this year, and since he's due $4.75 million in 2004, the Orioles are better off without him. Unfortunately, instead of this trade giving Jack Cust his big break, it probably means that we'll see a lot of Tony Batista in the DH spot in September, as B.J. Surhoff and Melvin Mora can occupy the infield corners. Larry Bigbie should benefit most, as he'll continue to play left field fairly regularly. As for Bautista, he has All-Star ability and could reach the majors in the second half of next season.
Is it just me, or does it seem like the O's are actually making a few decent moves?
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
Probably about the same. He does have better lineup protection, but Pro Player is a huge, pitcher friendly park, so his homers might suffer, but he should have more runs and RBIs.

Look for Cabrera to go to third and Conine to left.
These deals that the Marlins are making are just ridiculous. They're trading all their minor leaguers in an effort to make the World Series this year (since Castillo, Lowell, etc. are all FA's after this year). What they don't understand, is that they don't have the talent like the Giants to do that. The Giants don't have much in their farm system, while the Marlins have (or had) many studs (Gonzalez, Stokes, etc.). They've also got a rising staff (Willis, Beckett, Redman, Penny), and A.J. Burnett coming back from Tommy John. It's not all or nothing this year for the Marlins like it is for the Giants. If I were the Marlins, I'd definitely wait. I don't see them even making the playoffs this year and they'll be sorry that they traded a lot of their future.

Yeah, it seems to be typical Jeffery Loria management. He has to be the most inept and shortsighted owner in all of baseball. The fact that MLB let this guy have another team after the Expos debacle was just disgraceful.
