Maroth headed to Toledo for some rehab starts
DETROIT -- Left-hander Mike Maroth will experience a late-summer version of Opening Day when he starts Wednesday for the Toledo Mud Hens against the Columbus Clippers at Fifth Third Field.
Maroth, who has not pitched since late May, begins the rehabilitation leg of his comeback from elbow surgery in a restricted start (55 pitches) against the Yankees' top farm club.
"The recovery has been unbelievable," Maroth said Sunday after his latest bullpen session at Comerica Park cleared the way for Wednesday's start.
There is no firm timetable for Maroth's return to the Tigers. It is likely Maroth will make at least two starts for the Mud Hens before any decision is made on restoring him to the Tigers' rotation.
Maroth was 5-2 with a 3.56 ERA when he was knocked around in a May 25 start at Kansas City.
He was operated on a week later to have bone chips removed from his throwing elbow.
Maroth was expected to miss at least three months after the surgery -- a forecast that looks increasingly precise as Maroth, who turns 29 on Aug. 17, tunes up for a potential August return to his old job.
