Sweeney might DH tonight against Boston
By SAM MELLINGER
The Kansas City Star
Mike Sweeney finished his 11-game rehab assignment with Class AAA Omaha and left the team for Kansas City.
Sweeney could join the Royals as early as today, joining the lineup as the designated hitter for the start of the team’s three-game series against Boston. He went 11 for 35 with four home runs and three doubles in rehab stints at Class A Burlington, Class AA Wichita and Omaha.
Omaha manager Mike Jirschele, who had Sweeney for five games, said he believed Sweeney was ready to play in Kansas City. Sweeney has missed 88 games because of a bulging disk in his back.
“He looked healthy,” Jirschele said. “He swung the bat good. They pitched him tough here, of course. They were really working around him. He looked healthy, he ran good, didn’t have any problems.”
