Tigers acquire Sean Casey from Pirates

Postby Dannomyte » Mon Jul 31, 2006 10:19 am

From Ken Rosenthal

The Tigers, completing their quest to add a left-handed hitter, acquired first Sean Casey from the Pirates on Monday for a minor-league pitcher, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal is expected to be one of several by the Pirates before Monday's non-waiver deadline at 4 p.m.

I hate it when they just say "for a minor league pitcher" . WHICH ONE!?!?! I'm guessing it was no one significant but I'd still like to know.

Rumor has it the minor league pitcher was 24 year old Brian Rogers.

I like this deal. We give up nothing. Yeah, Rogers's numbers look good, but he's already 24 years old, still in AA and has no fastball.

Casey fulfills some needs of the Tigers: left handed bat and excellent plate discipline. Shelton simply can't be counted on as he is and will get some good work in lower pressure situations in Toledo, with a September return very likely. Casey has a good glove, but his power has been diminished the last couple of years. Regardless, a .377 OBP has definite value on a team notorious for poor plate discipline.

Worst case scenario is Casey gets hurt (a concern that comes along with him) soon after the trade and Shelton is recalled. Result is nothing gained nothing lost.

When I was returning from vacation I listened to the Tiger game and heard Casey in the line-up. I saw that Thames wasn't in the line-up and felt they traded him for Casey. Fair trade, thinks I. Then I hear they traded this Rogers guy. A guy so obscure that I don't recall Dannomyte giving any updates on him. What a steal for a player who will bring a decent glove to the field and solid all-fields hitter.

Cudos to DD ;-D
(when did you ever think you'd hear that from me!)
