Reggie Sanders a Dodger?

Postby jebatzel » Sun Aug 31, 2003 12:48 pm

"Reggie Sanders - OF - Pittsburgh Pirates Aug 31

Reggie Sanders has been claimed off waivers by the Dodgers, and the Pirates have until midnight tonight to work out a trade or recall the waivers.
Pirates GM Dave Littlefield did not confirm or deny the waiver claim or even if Sanders had been placed on waivers. Sanders' value will take a big hit if he goes to LA due to Dodger Stadium and a crowded outfield that would have to find time for him, Jeromy Burnitz, Shawn Green, Dave Roberts, and Rickey Henderson. Good move by both teams:

Dodgers get a better guy in LF

Pirates can now get a rookie in RF

I think personally this is a dumb trade by both teams. The dodgers already have quality outfielders and sanders seems unlikely to take any spots from the current starters. And as someone whose whole family is from Pittsburgh, the pirates are just killing me with this firesale. :-t

No, the Pirates can pull him back. Virtually every player in the majors is placed on waivers at some point in August, for the sake of roster flexibility, and then they are usually pulled back if claimed. I'm just surprised that the Pirates waited until the end of August to do it here.

Why would we want to keep a 35-year-old outfielder around next year, when we have young outfielders Jason Bay (LF/CF/RF), Tike Redman (CF), J.J. Davis (LF/RF), and Tony Alvarez (LF/CF/RF) coming up next year or already up? Davis might even develop into a Sanders type with a little more power -- he had 22 steals and 24 HR in 417 AAA at-bats this year as of this morning. We aren't likely to contend next year, so we can use it as a much-maligned, but very useful, rebuilding year.

I'm a long-time Pirates fan and trading Giles disgusted me but since everyone else is gone, get rid of Sanders also. If they can get something of value for the future, I'm all for it. Besides, it seems like the team plays better immediately after trading any regular starter. They won 4 straight after trading Giles. Maybe the can go on another streak if they trade Sanders. And don't stop there, trade Matt Stairs, Jason Kendall, Jose Hernandez, and the Pirate Parrot...
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'
