Bithorn Stadium?

Postby BobbyRoberto » Sun Aug 31, 2003 1:34 am

Does anyone know where I can find stats for the Expos games earlier this year at Bithorn Stadium in Puerto Rico? I remember hearing it had short power alleys, but I'm wondering if the offense there is comparable to Coors Field or Great American Ballpark, or what?
Roger Angell: I was talking with Bob Gibson and I said: 'Are you always this competitive?' He said: 'Oh, I think so. I got a three-year old daughter, and I've played about 500 games of tic-tac-toe with her and she hasn't beat me yet.'

TSN's pay site compiles ballpark stats for the year to date and the last three years. If you compare the stats from the 16 games this year to the other ballparks in MLB this year, Bithorn Stadium ranks 6th in scoring behind Arlington, SkyDome, Coors, Fenway, and Kaufman, with 11.56 runs per game for both teams.

However, it is at the top in home runs per game, with 3.9 homers per game on average. The next closest stadium for homers is Coors with 3.1 HR/game. For batting average, it only ranks middle of the pack.

Seeing games there on TV, these stats make some sense, because that stadium has a whole lot of foul territory, almost comparable to the foul territory in Oakland, and that can be expected to reduce batting average. However, the right and left field dimensions are much smaller than any MLB stadium, which would explain the homers.

Bottom line, a great place to start power hitters. For pitchers, it's a bit risky, but really if you'd start a pitcher at Fenway, Kauffman or SkyDome, it's probably just as safe to start them in San Juan.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at which of my pitchers might be pitching there (Brad Penny is one) and had heard that it's a small park. I hadn't considered the foul territory, though, so your info helps me out.

For those of us that didn't trade away or give up on Vlad this could be six games that put you over the hump. Vlad has been on fire. He has 22 homeruns and missed all that time. He could have 30 by the time this home stand is over. The Expos know it is due or die this week.
