How important are Max pitched innings?

Postby yourgodsdice » Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:16 pm

I'm in first place with the second place guy on my tail, but I noticed that he's +67 innings pitched, which means he only has about just over 400 innings left to pitch this season. Meanwhile, I'm -25 innings, so I'm doing well and maybe could do some intelligent spot starts to help give me more innings. I was wondering how important is this and could it hurt him significantly come the end of the season?

It basically means that he can't keep up the pace. He's going to stop collecting pitching stats with time left in the season. It won't make much of a difference for ERA or WHIP, but you definitely could make up ground on W, K, and SV.

+67 and -25 aren't that big of a difference, But it will help you a bit as the season winds down.

I have a simlar question. I'm in second, and projected to come in about 40 innings under the maximum, while the first place guy is projected to be more than 140 over. He's fairly far ahead of me in W's, outs, and K's, and I'm behind in saves, but have almost closed the gap (down by 4). If he maintains his pace I should be able to make up some ground, no?

I'm also trailing in ERA and WHIP which I know his maxing out won't help, but it gives me time to lower mine (I'm last in WHIP, second to last in ERA, but have been lowering both due to some recent acquisitions and guys pitching better).

Ya you'll catch some ground. But getting better ratios isn't always the easiest to do.
