This year, there is no specifically clear winner at this moment, maybe Liriano (from the threads I've read he seems to be the clear favorite) but others definitely deserve credit. I know there are many threads on this but I wanted to put it in poll form. I guess if we want we can just move the discussion here. From what I know the main candidates are Liriano, Papelbon and Verlander, and the black horse being Weaver. Who's gonna win it? The Cafe's answer is...
I've been saying Papelbon for months, but Liriano keeps closing the gap. Liriano may win the Cy Young too, if he keeps pitching the way he's been pitching. It's going to go down to the wire IMO. Any other year, Verlander would be a slam dunk, but Liriano and Paps have been SICK!!!
Papelbon has been great as a closer, but his contribution just doesn't come close to what Liriano has done for the twins every 5th day. NOBODY should be able to shut teams down like that.
It's Liriano at this point. Alot of things could happen though. Weaver has yet to lose and I'm sure if he ended up with something like 15 wins and an ERA under 2 he would have a very good chance. Verlander has been amazing as well, and he is leading his team their team to the vest record in the AL, yeah he is the leader of that staff so far. And well we all know about Papelbon, but IMO I don't see them giving it to a Closer 2 years in a row.
Still interesting to see though how much these Rookies are affecting their teams. These 4 guys could all lead their teams into the playoffs.
I wish jared weaver started pitching earlier, and liriano pitched as a starter right at the beginning of the year. Then we might see something special: 3 rooking pitchers with 20 wins.
