Some of us play in deep keeper leagues so this is relevant. Also, who knows how long Julio will last given his last 2 outings and the trade deadline looming. With that said, here's a chart listing the date, inning Valverde was used (each outing was exactly 1 IP), ERs, Hits, BBs, Walks, Extra info:
7/7......6th, 1ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K
7/9......8th, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K
7/14....8th, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 0K
7/16....8th, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K
7/18....7th, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 0K (was the last inning of 7 inning game)
7/20....9th, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 1K (not a save situation with 4-run lead)
7/22....9th, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 1K (save)
7/25....9th, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K (save)
Yes, I know saves aren't that meaningful in the minors, but given the particulars, this leads one to think the D-backs may be trying to get Valverde back into closer shape. Just passing on info.
I still believe that there is a chance that Valverde gets another shot this season. When they gave Julio his job, it was clear that they still percieved Valverde as their best reliever and the closer of the future. And for good reason - but for some Bob Brenly-induced injuries, he would have been closing the past two years for them. And before his May mechanical problems, the guy has been an absolute stud as a closer/set-up guy since 2002.
It is nice to see that he is back on track, and I am confident that he will get saves in the event that Julio is moved. I play in such a leage as you describe - thanks for the update.
When you send a guy to AAA, you're just hoping he can be a useful MR-- a last guy out of the pen-- when you bring him back up (he wasn't injured, I don't think, so you as the GM can't rely on him being ready until he proves himself for a serious period of time in the majors as a mere MR). He's a long way from being the closer. I think Tony A. Pena has a better chance of closing than Valverde.
Chris Iannetta was born on Krypton and transported to Earth as an infant and saves the universe when he's not getting on base every plate appearance.

Point well noted. I think I am going to just sit tight with McClung. He has been tearing it up in AAA.
(Note: all of you in need of a potential closer pick up Valverde since I went the other way. These things always have a tendency of blowing up in my face)

I'm serious. Sending a guy to AAA when you are trying to win the division is a total act of desperation-- because every other plan was unworkable. They'd have kept him and used him as a setup man if they thought it was a good idea. Their determination was that he was too messed up to even handle that.
