The Big Hurt not the same?

Postby LCBOY » Wed Aug 27, 2003 6:58 pm

What has happened to the Big Hurt? For ten years he was being compared to Ted Williams and now his a .264 hitter? He used to regularly compete for the batting title. I don't think he has aged well. Any opinions?

Fell off the radar a couple of years ago. Hasn't aged well at all. There is a decent shot of him putting up good numbers across the board next year though. ;-)

Why do you think he has not aged well? He is the same age as Sheffield, Kent, Bagwell, Salmon (all born in 1968). Of course Roberto Alomar and J.T. Snow were also born in 1968 and they haven't aged well either.

Not sure. Guess maybe he just lost focus for awhile...

part of it is the pitchers. for the past two years or so they have been feeding him a steady diet of inside pitches which he couldnt hit or were called strikes. throw in a hitting coach change and growing frustrations for not getting the respect at the the plate from the umps that he thought he deserved and he sank pretty quickly. he has opened his stance up this year and i think went back to his old hitting coach. the power has come back but the average is still lower than normal. he might bring it back up next year though.

Average is down for sure, but his OPS is still 7th in the AL, and he's 2nd in HRs. I remember him saying something while he was mired in a slump earlier this year about how he was going to stop focusing on average and start ripping the ball.

Speak of the devil. He just hit another!

Part of it is that Manuel became convinced that Frank was a huge defensive liability at 1B, and took Frank off the field. Frank has ALWAYS hit much better at 1B than at DH, probably because he stews and frets so much about his hitting while sitting on the bench. When Manuel put Hurt in at 1B earlier this summer, Frank broke out in a big way - until Manuel decided Konerko was his 1B, and then Frank immediately went into a slump.

This season's BA for Frank: .352 while playing 1B, .243 while at DH

It's funny that Frank hits better when he plays 1B, but defensively he sucks hard. So what is a manger to do?
